Psychology Services During the COVID-19 Pandemic

As a result of Stage 4 restrictions and recent advice from DHHS and the Australian Psychological Society, Janet will now be delivering all appointments by telehealth until September 13th 2020.  The only exception to this, allowing for clinic-based psychology appointments, will be if the following criteria are met:   

- a client is unable to have their appointment by teleconference or phone call due to privacy or clinical issues, and therapy cannot be postponed or put on hold without compromising the client's safety or mental wellbeing.  


Medicare rebates will continue to be received for sessions under Mental Health Care Plans as applied to clinic appointments, and you are now able to receive up to 20 sessions this calendar year if you are the Metropolitan Melbourne area (you will require a review referral from your GP after your 10th session to access this).  97% + of Private Health Insurers are providing rebates for telehealth (for clients who are covered for psychology) - please check with your own provider.


Telehealth Sessions

Dr. Maxwell has carefully selected a secure telehealth service through Cliniko that uses a peer-to-peer connection and end-to-end encryption and is compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Australian Privacy Principles (APP), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). It is easy to use, and to date has been reliable in maintaining a reasonable video connection.


There are a few factors to consider if you choose telehealth psychology services:

• If using a video connection you will need a mobile phone, tablet or computer connected to the internet

• Dr. Maxwell will send you a secure link- you simply need a web browser

• Please be mindful of data costs if you don't have access to a wifi connection, or if your data usage is limited

• Importantly, you will need a private space where you can sit comfortably for the duration of the session, preferably without interruption and where you will not be overheard by others

• If you would prefer not to attend the clinic but are not able to use videoconferencing, it is also an option to have your sessions delivered by phone call (this is also classed as telehealth)

• Some clients have been choosing to have their telehealth session in their car (obviously whilst parked!) where they don't have a private space at home

• Sessions delivered by telehealth are charged at the usual session rate and you will receive your medicare rebate as usual (if you have a current mental health care plan). If you are experiencing financial hardship, please contact me to discuss your fees.

Clinic Sessions

Clinic sessions will now only be available to clients who are unable to use telehealth due to privacy or clinical reasons and where delaying the session would lead to a deterioration in mental health.


Please note the following changes:

If you have any cold or flu like symptoms or have had contact with a suspected case of COVID-19, please do not attend the clinic.

• Masks are now mandatory for clinic sessions (unless you have a medical exemption)

• Surgical masks are provided, or you may wear your own.

• Clients attending the clinic are encouraged to have a 'no touch visit'

• Temperature checks (no touch) are performed upon arrival. If you present with a temperature of 37.5 degrees or above, your session will be rescheduled or moved to telehealth

• Please wait in your car if this is possible until I open the clinic door for you (please text me when you have arrived, and I will call you in by text message)

• Pay by bank transfer rather than EFTPOS where possible

• Chairs are cleaned between sessions and there is increased distance between seating in the consulting room

• Please bring your own water bottle
